Of Perl and PHP - Part #2

    By Titmowse | Writer @ CozyFrog | OCT.12.2005
** Continued From: Of Perl and PHP - Part #1

Anyone who has ever learned a foreign language knows that the best way to become fluent is to surround yourself with the language. One is more inclined to adapt when one is forced to communicate in that language. A person will master Spanish faster by interacting with others who speak only Spanish. Such is true with French, Chinese, Arabic, Italian or any other spoken language.

"If you ever intend to operate a dynamic adult web site, you're going to need to have a basic understanding of Perl/CGI and PHP."
Learning a new programming or scripting language is similar to learning a new spoken one. One can read books and go to school but practical application is where the real learning happens. You learned HTML by playing with scripts and viewing the codes of other pages. You learned by reading tutorials and scanning message boards for tips. You learned by configuring sponsor tags to fit your web pages.

You learned because you had to. You learned because HTML is everywhere in your adult business.

Perl is a language prevalent in this industry. It’s the language used when creating CGI scripts. PHP is another very popular scripting language that works well on the web.

If you ever intend to operate a dynamic adult web site, you’re going to need to have a basic understanding of Perl/CGI and PHP. If you want to post a simple email form on your site you need special scripts.

If you want to open a paysite, you’re going to need scripts that will let you sign up members and take their money. Perl/CGI and PHP are the ends to those means. It would be wise to take the time to visit the sites and play with the tools that will help you learn Perl/CGI and PHP the same way you learned HTML.

    Tutorial/Instruction Sites:

Run by TDavid, Script School is the recommended destination of many an adult webmaster. If you get the chance, you might be able to participate in one of his live radio-based shows. If not, you can always take advantage of his killer archived classes covering both Perl/CGI and PHP. TDavid is a very nice fellow who wants to share his knowledge with you. Don’t be afraid to email him a question.

This long-running site created just for web developers contains some of the best instruction for the beginner. Their tutorials are super easy to understand. When you go there look for the "programming" section link. Within it you’ll find simple lessons on both Perl/CGI and PHP.

This authoritative resource offers a great newbie tutorial plus an even more detailed online manual. If you need to learn PHP, this is the place to hit.

    Script Sites:

This site contains more than twenty thousand scripts in more than a thousand categories. If you’re looking for CGI and PHP scripts to practice on, this would be an excellent site to start with. As well as an incredible amount of scripts this site also features tips, tutorials and a message board called Programming Talk.

Matt’s Script Archive is home of some of the most oft used CGI scripts in the adult Internet. Mail forms, submit forms, Matt’s got them and they work!

You’ll surely find what you need from their collection of over 2500 completed PHP scripts. You’ll also find almost 200 examples and tutorials that will aid you in your research.

As you’ll see when you explore the above, there are plenty of scripts, lessons, examples and experts willing to help you learn Perl/CGI and PHP. Some of the scripts cost money. There are a few of the resources that require you to pay a fee before you get to the goods. Yet on the whole, most of the info and the scripts are free as you long as you abide by conditions of use.

If you still can’t figure it out or you just don’t have the time to try, then hire an expert. There are folks out there, who know how to write, install and troubleshoot CGI and PHP scripts. They guy who helped me write this article is just such a guy. His name is Venturi and he runs a site called Cyboriginal. For a reasonable fee he can get you up and running better than ever before!
