    Let’s Spend Some Money! - Part #1

    By Titmowse | Writer @ CozyFrog | JAN.05.2004
Here at Cozy, we like to stress caution when spending money. We advise new webmasters to take it slow. Don’t spend dollars on services or products until you understand the way things work on the adult web. Yes, you will have to spend money someday. But until you’re able to comprehend the ins and outs of the adult Internet, you take the risk of losing any dollars you invest.

"A domain name is only worth the value of the site it points to."
Nevertheless, the day comes. You’re ready. You know how to build a marketable website. You know how to discriminate between glamour content and filler content. You’re aware of the capabilities of a virtual server vs. a dedicated server. You have become knowledgeable about how to protect your site from hotlinkers by virtue of htaccess. You’re a good student. You’ve practiced with your free-hosted sites and galleries. You’re making a profit without spending a dime and now you know it’s time to move up. You’re prepared to buy a domain and pay for server space. You’re set to own your own adult web site.

Getting started as a site owner needn’t be a complicated or expensive process. The fact is it’s pretty cheap to register a domain, open a hosting account, build a page and fill it with content. That is, if you begin slowly.

    Domain Registration

In the early days of the World Wide Web, it used to cost around a hundred dollars to register a domain name. Thankfully those days are long gone. You can register a domain name for less than ten dollars a year. There are plenty of ICANN approved domain registrars who are more than happy to register your name and temporarily park it as well.

The question you have to ask yourself is whether or not you want to create a domain name or whether you want to buy a domain that’s already in existence.

There are a couple of ways to go about buying a pre-existing domain name. You can buy one from the owner or you can buy one from a registrar. Many times an owned domain comes complete with a standing website and search engine links. For whatever reason, the owner has decided they don’t want the site anymore and has put it up for sale. This type of domain costs more but is worth more because of the labor the owner put into the project.

There are a few places where domain owners either sell or auction URLs they own. Some of them are:

  • Ebay (http://www.ebay.com)
  • Yahoo (http://www.yahoo.com)
  • Expired Adult (http://www.expiredadult.com)
  • Fallen Domains (http://www.fallendomains.com)

The other way is to register a domain you thought up. While it’s true that most short, keyword rich domains are already registered, that doesn’t mean all of them are. It’s still possible to invent a new domain name that is easy to remember and highly marketable. A domain name is only worth the value of the site it points to. A domain name like Yahoo would be worth very little without the service it provides.

Untitled Page

One of the adult Internet’s biggest top lists is Persian Kitty. Without the hard work and vision of the site’s webmistress, the domain persiankitty.com would probably end up the URL to a cat lover’s page.

If you’ve cooked up a domain name you like, you need to find out if some other webmaster thought of it first. Almost any domain registrar offers a free domain lookup tool. Type the domain name you’re hoping to register into the lookup tool and see if it’s already taken. If the name is free, buy it. Not all registrars charge the same fee to register a domain. Shop around, find a registrar with fees terms and services to your liking. Some domain registrars are:

  • Dotster (http://www.dotster.com)
  • Godaddy (http://www.godaddy.com)
  • DirectNic (http://www.directnic.com)
  • Network Solutions (http://www.directnic.com)

Caution is the key to buying a domain name. If you’re buying a pre-owned domain or site, make sure the seller is reputable. Look for sellers who sell through an escrow account. That way, you and the seller are protected during the transaction and transfer process. Research the domain. See if it’s been blacklisted by search engines or appears on spam-filtering databases. If you investigate a pre-existing domain and think something’s hinky, don’t buy it. Come up with a name of your own.

When you register a domain of your own, save enough money to register variations, misspellings and other extensions of your domain as well as the original. That way you can redirect confused surfers to your main dot com URL. If your new domain is yourpage.com, then register dot net, dot biz as well as typo versions like yurpage.com or yuorpage.com.

In another article, I’ll cover other products and services you’ll purchase when you arrive at the point where you know it’s time to buy. For right now, a domain name is enough. After all, you can’t own your own web page if you don’t own your domain. Buy smart when you’re ready to buy and you’ll always make a smart buy.
