** Continued From: Let's Spend Some Money! - Part #1
In my last article (the first of three parts) I explained the Cozy position on spending money for your adult page. The Cozy position is this: Don’t spend dollars on services or products until you understand the way things work on the adult web.
"One can own an adult site without doling out great gobs of green. You can spend money without bleeding money." |
I wrote that the time inevitably comes when one should invest some cash into this crazy porn thing. I then showed you readers some places where you can register your domain name for practically pennies. The purpose of that article as well as this one and the next one- is to explain how one can own an adult site without doling out great gobs of green. You can spend money without bleeding money.
In part one I showed you that registering a domain name is very inexpensive. No one can truly own their own site without first registering a domain name. Now I’d like to explain about web hosting and how you can pay next to nothing to get it.
The next logical step after the domain name is the hosting. You could skip ahead to step three and buy content first but eventually, you’re gonna have to get the hosting. Your freshly registered domain name means nothing unless it’s pointed to a DNS server.
Today you can open a small virtual hosting count for about the same price as a domain registration. While mainstreamers are gouged byte by byte by n/mainstream hosts, adult webmasters find the good prices. There are several hosts who are adult-friendly and also offer small packages for beginning site owners. You can have your adult site up and running for less than ten dollars.
The least expensive hosting for the new site owner is virtual hosting. When you have a virtual hosting account you share the server with other webmasters. Hosting providers charge less for virtual server accounts. As far as limitations on storage space and transfers, it’s up to the individual host provider. Some will offer 20 megs of storage and 2 gigs of transfer for around eight bucks. Others charge more for less and less for more. What’s great about these server starter packages is they’re a discount way to get your feet wet as a site owner.
Mind you, virtual hosting has its flaws. For one, you’re sharing space with other accounts. If one of your server roomies happens to be the victim of a denial of service attack, your site can go offline as well. If your server goes down, you can’t make money. But all in all, for ten bucks a month, a virtual account is a pretty good deal.

You want your own hosting account as an adult webmaster. Free-hosts are an excellent service. Some adult webmasters do pretty well with free hosting. But the fact is, you look more professional and are more likely to be listed on links sites or TGPs when you have your own host account.
Free hosts are notoriously famous for redirecting a certain amount of visitors on your site to their sites. In addition, quite a few hosts embed their advertising in the headers and footers of your free-hosted pages. When you have your own host you have control over advertising and traffic. When you have your own host, you have your own email address. When you have a paid host, you are fully in charge of your web.
Some providers who offer virtual hosting that’s adult friendly and priced inexpensively are:
- Velcom (http://www.velcom.com)
- Candid Hosting (http://candidhosting.com)
- Webair (http://www.webair.com)
- Adult Hosting (http://www.adulthosting.com)
- ErotiHost (http://www.erotihost.com)
- Complete Hosting Resource Listings
Paid hosting doesn’t have to empty your bank account. With a starter virtual account you can begin your journey. After a point you’ll be able to afford the big servers. After a point you’ll need the big servers. But until then spend your money only on what you need.
You have your domain and you have your paid hosting account. The last part of this series will focus on the meat of your adult site: Content. Stay tuned froggers.
