Tough for the Little Guy!

He could be a little little guy like you or me. We're rolling along as fast as we can but we know we'll never be as fast as the big guys because we got in the race too late. The overnight success days are gone along with the insane riches, if there ever were any. Plenty of big guys made a flash in the pan and the ones still around are hustling just like the rest of us, only on a big guy scale. If you're looking for a history that includes us hardly working and getting stinking rich, it doesn't exist.

Hells yeah. So far. But you still have to work your butt off.

There are some big Internet porn companies and websites that benefit and will always benefit from early placement. These are the proverbial birds who rose early and caught the worms. They're now mini-kingdoms, possessing vast wealth like reliable traffic, top keyword placement, incoming links galore and name recognition. These mini-kings either retire due to great fortune or disappear due to great scandal. These kingdoms cannot be replaced or replicated. As their dominions diminish, others will swoop in to collect the spoils but there will never be gangsters like the OG gangsters.

We also have certain players who were once novices like you. They studied at the feet of their kings and fellow webmasters. They adopted working strategies, developed newer, better strategies. They realized that they just had to crank a little harder and think a little bolder and soon, many of them got to be big guys.

We've also seen big guys, medium guys and all sorts of guys (like women) merge and converge and morph into amalgamations of trusted names and reputations. We've got partnerships and buyouts. Consequently, we've grown as an industry enough to require specialization. Ten years ago, there simply weren't all the designers, hosts or content producers there are right now. Internet porn isn't going anywhere but selling it is harder than ever before. Our profession is extremely competitive.

Of course there is. Here's a secret about our business: People quit all the time. Probably almost half of us don't work at this hard enough to wear big-boy pants. Some of us don't even want to be big guys. We'd rather be employed by them.

There is room for you as long as you keep your mind open, your elbows sharpened and your nose to the grindstone. You have to learn the ropes, do the job and hold your options open. You must look for opportunity and if you can't find it, make it. It won't be easy. It never really was. There's tedium and monotony in abundance. You will be required to work on your own without supervision. If you aren't getting anywhere, you just need to keep going. Sometimes you'll have to start over. Many times you will fail. When you succeed, you're to repeat the effort over and over again.

Tough? You betcha. Impossible? Not yet. Millions of dollars with hookers and blow? Doubtful.

You see, our industry may be bohemian but the desire to make money is not. If you dream of wasting your time on hookers and blow, you're doing it wrong. Providing smut to the Internet is first and foremost, a business. The big guys got to be big because they did the deeds and payed their debts. Maybe you'll never be a big guy but you can be a self-sustaining guy. You can be the guy that did okay for a couple of years and then got big. You can be the guy that works for guys. You can be a little guy that's perfectly happy to be a little guy. Can you be a king? Anything's possible.

You may have it tough but we all have it tough. The ones that survive are the ones that survive. Nothing is predestined. Don't let the monarchs and lords intimidate you. Grab your patch of Internet and dig in, little guy!
