I own all kinds of webmaster-related software. Funny thing is, when it comes down to the programs I use every day, the store-bought applications collect dust. Most of the time I use the freeware programs I first downloaded years ago.
Maybe I stick with the older software because it’s familiar. Maybe I’m not smart enough to properly operate powerhouse applications like Dreamweaver or PhotoShop. Maybe it’s a little of both. Whatever the reason, the tools I rely upon most often are freeware and shareware. I used to use them because I was poor. Now I employ them because I want to.
As I said before, I’m no high roller. I like a good bargain as much as the next webmaster. No matter how much money I make, my favorite price will always be free.
That’s why I wrote this article. I wanted to tell you about some webmaster programs that I’ve found that are useful and won’t cost you a penny. Two of them I’ve recommended before and one is exciting and new. All three are easy to use and without spyware. There are bigger, more expensive programs similar to the following three but for the beginning adult webmaster, you’ll probably get more use out of these:
I’ve written about this HTML editor at least ten times. Needless to say, I love it. I own copies of Dreamweaver, MS Front Page and Adobe Page Mill. I rarely touch them. When I need to write some HTML code, I always, always fire up the Arachnophilia.
I like Arachnophilia because it’s a simple Visual HTML editor. The Visual environment is a bit different that the WYSIWYG environment. In WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) you view your webpage is it would look in a user’s browser. You drag and drop elements onto the page as you go. This is a swell way to create websites if you never want to learn the HTML language. The problem is, the best WYSIWYG editor is going to write flawed code. Even the superior webmaster makes the occasional mistake. If you don’t know HTML, how will you fix the flaws on your page?

In the Visual environment of Arachnophilia, you see the Code as you add it to your page. In a Visual environment the software knows the tags and elements and pieces of code needed to create an HTML document. When you run this kind of software you add tags through the file menu or by highlighting tags/text and clicking toolbar Icons. The longer you work in a code-based environment, the better you’ll come to master the HTML language. Arachnophilia doesn’t just show you HTML, it teaches HTML to you.
Here’s my theory about Search Engines. If one indexes your site, eventually they’ll all index your site.
Mind you, this SE submitter is fairly small. It only submits your project to a maximum of 20 search engines. However, it’s got some big features such as the ability to save individual projects and live submission results. There’s a META tag generator and a keyword analyzer. You can categorize your site with each engine and after you’ve set up all your details, you just click a button and AdaURL does the rest.
After I build my websites, I always use AdaURL for search engine submission. My sites always get indexed. Could be luck. Could be this cool, free program.

I like that I can buy software when I need it. I remember the days when I couldn’t afford such things. Now I can install and run the software that I want instead of what I can afford. Some of it I bought. Some of it is free. The free programs I mentioned above are on my machine because they work and because I like using them. That fact that they cost me nothing is gravy.
