    Your Business Plan!

    By Steve | Writer @ CozyFrog | AUG.14.2003
When new webmasters start off in this industry, some fail to realise that they are embarking on a business. I guess it's hard to think of porn as a business but it very definitely is. Normal business principles do apply.

"A simple plan that sets out your goals and how you intend to achieve them can be an invaluable tool to keep you focused as you grow into this industry."
Any income derived from sponsor sales needs to be declared to the income tax authorities and any expenses incurred in operating your porn business may become a legitimate business expense and so may be claimed as an offset against your income.

You also need to look at your local ordinances to ensure that operating your little empire does not bring you into non-compliance. You may think that there is very little for you to worry about because you are simply operating it from the back room of your house or the spare bedroom in your apartment but that may not be the case. It is always wise to check just in case you may find yourself in trouble further down the line.

The other thing you need to do is to set out a simple business plan as a road map for your budding business empire. If you don't know what a business plan is then check out your local library, even look online. Here are a few links that you might find helpful:

There is even a Dummies book that will help you. Business Plans for Dummies is listed on Amazon.com.

Those links and the books that you might find will give you some idea of what a business plan should look like. Usually a business plan is quite comprehensive because it is designed to help a small business obtain financial support from banks and investors.

Not all parts of a business plan are useful to a new webmaster because few banks are ever going to lend us money simply because of the nature of our business so plotting projected income and expenditure is not of great value to anyone starting out in this industry. However, a simple plan that sets out your goals and how you intend to achieve them can be an invaluable tool to keep you focused as you grow into this industry.

Most people start in this industry with some vague idea of what they want to achieve and how they will reach those goals. Then as they are further exposed to the vibrant currents that flow through the adult online world, they can become distracted, even disorientated so that they lose their focus and become like moths; attracted to every bright light that they find.

In this industry there are numerous ways of making money but each takes time and requires a lot of hard work but for new webmasters the thought is always there that their fortune is just around the corner. That means that they try every new scheme that they might come across without remaining focused on anything long enough to see if it will really work for them.

A simple business plan helps to keep you focussed when you are confronted with the siren song of some new get rich quick scheme. At the same time a business plan needs to be flexible to help you embrace new ideas that you may pick up. Your business plan also needs to be flexible to take into account changes in the way the industry does business.

Your business plan will also help you stay focussed when lethargy sets in and it always does. For some it comes sooner than for others but when it hits it can become quite hard to sit down at your computer and know what to do next. Your business plan will spell it out for you.

So you actually want to write a simple, flexible business plan? The first thing to do is to sit down with some paper and a pencil. Always use a pencil, never a pen because you want to make your plan flexible to account for changes in the industry. Anything written in pencil can be easily erased and altered as changes happen whereas anything written in pen has a look of permanence.

Set yourself realistic goals for 6 months into the future, 12 months, 18 months and 2 years. Then set out how you intend to achieve those goals, what techniques you will use, what tools and skills you will need to equip yourself with to achieve those goals.

When you have completed it put it up somewhere close to your workstation and refer to it often. Use it to plan your day's work, your finances and even your self-education. When confronted with a new idea measure it against your plan and see if it might work for you.

This industry is constantly changing so when a change occurs look to your business plan. It will help you assess the impact that the changes will have on your business and possibly show you ways of adapting to those changes.

Changes in your personal life and finances can also be assessed through your business plan.

Of course sometimes things happen that will have a big impact on you and your business. That is why your business plan should be flexible and easily changed to take account of those influences. A plan written in pencil is easily altered while a business plan set in concrete becomes a burden.

In this business, it is very easy to keep your head down and stay so focussed on your business that time just zooms by. A business plan with short and long-term goals helps you look back and assess whether or not you have actually achieved anything. It will help you identify your successes and your failures. Regular reviews will enable you to discard what is not working and focus on what is producing income for you.

It's very easy to fall into the trap of thinking that if we are not furiously typing code into a HTML document then we are not making money. Setting up a simple business plan or outline using an old fashioned pencil could make you even more money!
