This article will not give you the magic formula to get thousands of hits from a number one ranking for a popular search term in all the engines.
For one thing, that's just not possible. There really is no secret formula that will give you an instant #1 ranking on each and every engine for a popular term. All the engines vary widely in their algorithms for determining rankings, so a page that might make #1 on Altavista would possibly not even be in the top 100 at Metacrawler. What this article is meant to do is inform you of the very basics of tuning your sites for search engines, without focusing on any engine in particular.
It will give you basic definitions and tell you what each part of the page can do to improve your rankings. This article will focus on true engines, those that use computer programs to crawl and index your site, NOT directories (which are sometimes called search engines) which index your site after a human editor visits your site. An example of a true search engine is Altavista.
First of all, here is an example of the tag of a document tuned for search engines:
Keyword Phrases and Meta Tags
This section could come between your and your tags in your HTML document. It is meant to give "food" to the search engines. Something they can use to categorize and rank your site. I will describe each part and what it can do for your rankings, as well as why you need them.
First comes the title. It should be concise and accurate, and using one or two keyword phrases that you would like to place for. The title is the single most important part of your HTML document with regards to your placement in the search engines. It is also what a surfer will see as the clickable link when they perform a search and find your site, so it should be intriguing enough to make them click!

"You want the description to accurately describe the content of your site..." |
If you want to place for "foot fetish" and "toe sucking" then your title might be "Toe Sucking Girls Foot Fetish". The fewer words your title has, the more likely it is to rank higher for the phrases it contains. Using too many words in your title or meta tags will cause what is referred to as "dilution". Dilution is when you use too many words so that the percentage of your words is lowered. For example, if you have a ten word title, each word would have 10%, however if your title was only five words, each word would get 20% and two words would give each word 50%!
In your title, you should avoid using words such as "like", "and", "as", "internet" and other common words. These words are called stop words and many engines will stop reading your title if it finds these words and anything after them will be ignored. These words will not help your ranking, and will dilute the words that you do use. Instead of saying, "Sexy Girls with Big Breasts and Tits" you should say, "Sexy Girls Big Breasts Tits". Some people frown on this, but I can't understand why. The only problem this might present is that some search engine surfers might see it as spam and avoid it, but those surfers are probably very experienced online and if they know about spam, they probably won't buy an adult membership from you anyway!
Your title tag should be no more than 80 characters long, including spaces. Some engines support title tags as long as 1024 characters, but to be on the safe side, you should limit your title to 80 characters. This way you won't exclude yourself from any engines, and you won't dilute your words as much.
Untitled Page
Next is your meta description. This is what the search engine will display underneath the title when someone performs a search and finds your site. Most engines do not use the description to determine your ranking, so DO NOT be tempted to overload this tag with keywords. You want the description to accurately describe the content of your site while giving surfers a compelling reason to visit your site.
Consider these examples:
"sex, pussy, tits, ass, hardcore, teens, porn, big breasts, boobs, gay, lesbian, foot fetish, spanking"
"Free pictures of beautiful women with big tits having sex with well hung men, with free sex stories."
Supposing you were looking for Pornstar hardcore, which one would you probably click? Well, the first one is scary. It leads me to believe that if I click that link, I'm going to find dozens of banners, no content, and maybe some nasty browser crashing popups. However the second one makes me thing that I will find some nice free pictures and stories related to what I'm looking for. So I would almost definitely click the second one, and avoid the first one like the plague.
Your description should be 150 to 250 characters long. Anything over 150 characters may or may not be cut off by certain engines, however you should not be penalized for having 250 characters. Just make sure to say what you need to say in the first 150 characters, just in case.
Next is your keyword tag. This tag is where you should place phrases that you think people might search for when looking for a site with the content that your site offers. If you have a foot fetish site you might try "foot fetish", "foot worship", "sole tickling", "toe sucking", "stocking feet" and other keywords. Anything you think someone MIGHT search for, put it here. However don't go overboard, and don't repeat the same words more than three times in the keyword tag.
Some engines may see this as spam and ban your site from the engine permanently! Opinions vary over how exactly you should write your keyword tag. Some people say you should use commas and spaces between words, some people say you should use commas and no spaces, and some people say spaces and no commas. I have personally found no real difference in these three methods, so I use what is must comfortable for me, which is commas and spaces, as in my example at the top of the article. You should use whatever you think works best for you.
