    Beware the Splog!

    By Titmowse | Writer @ CozyFrog | JAN.26.2006
You already know what SPAM is. Odds are you probably know what a Blog is. Answer me this:

Do you know about Splogs?

Don't tell me. You guessed it! SPAM + Blog = Splog!

"There are Blogs that are filled with SPAM and then there are Bloggers who SPAM. Sometimes these two are combined into SPAMMING BLOGGERS WITH SPAM BLOGS."
Perhaps you've heard of Splogs. Maybe not. Possibly you know of Splogs but never knew there was a term for these SPAM Bloggers. Then again, you could be unfamiliar with Blogs yet not surprised at the prospect of Blog SPAM. Whatever your level of understanding, there's a new SPAMMER in town and they're aiming for Blogs.

    HOW TO RECOGNIZE A SPLOG

First, keep in mind there are Blogs that are filled with SPAM and then there are Bloggers who SPAM. Sometimes these two are combined into SPAMMING BLOGGERS WITH SPAM BLOGS. However, there is a distinction between these two types of Splogging.

The SPAM BLOG is nothing more than a site stuffed with affiliate links, spyware, useless text or a permutation of the three. A real Blog is comprised of mostly content plus links to other real Blogs. A real Blog contains thoughtfully written text that relates to a central theme. Sure, there are picture Blogs and video Blogs, but they too feature substance over advertising. A real Blog isn't some dumping ground for banners or some Google indexing scheme. A real Blog is worth visiting.

Beware the SPAM BLOGS when adding links to your Blogroll.

The SPAMMING BLOGGER is the one you discover in the comment sections of your Blog. If you are getting any kind of decent traffic from your Blog, you've undoubtedly encountered a SPAMMING BLOGGER. Sometimes the SPAMMING BLOGGER is obvious. They comment: "Visit www.iamaspammingblogger.com Now!". Others are subtler with replies such as: "That's a fascinating post you wrote. See my take on the subject at: www.iamaspammingblogger.com". However they package it, they are SPAMMING BLOGGERS and they must be stopped.

The cool thing about Blogs is that visitors can leave feedback through your comment form. A dependable stable of regular commentors is a happy thing for any Blog webmaster. There's nothing more irritating than some goon trying to ruin the party with nasty old SPAM.

Monitor your Blog comments. Look for SPAMMING BLOGGERS and put an end to their repulsive behavior.

HOW TO STOP SPAMMING BLOGGERS AND SPAM BLOGS

Sadly, you can't actually stop SPAM. Nevertheless, you can limit and fight the SPAM you see in RSS, on the web and in the comments of your Blog.

To fight SPAM BLOGS, try reporting them. If the SPAM BLOG is residing on a free Blog host like Google's BlogSpot, fill out a complaint form and turn that SPAM BLOG in. If the SPAM BLOG isn't on a free host, you can report SPAM BLOGS either Splog Reporter or SplogSpot.

If you need to take care of icky SPAMMING BLOGGERS then you'll need to monitor and filter your Blog comments. If you use a comment service like HaloScan, you can take care of the buggers online without a single stroke of programming. HaloScan allows even free users to edit visitor comments and apply keyword filters to all comments. One can turn off HTML and disallow objectionable phrases. If you want, you can turn off commenting completely.

We hope you don't have to go that far to curtail SPAMMING COMMENT SPAMMING BLOGGERS. A bit of determination and regular monitoring should keep your visitors happy and ready to post without fear.

Speaking of fear, it's one reason why Splogs are so evil. SPAMMING BLOGGERS and SPAM BLOGS spread fear. They're no better than circle jerks, unwanted BHOs or auto-downloading dialers Splogs make the Internet less fun because surfers become fearful of visiting new Blogs. Another reason Splogs are evil is pollute search engines with useless links and make SE optimization that much harder for the adult webmaster.

Beware the Splog! Don't link to them. Don't tolerate them on the web or allow them to shit in your Blog comments. Report them. Monitor them. Edit their posts and filter them out. Do it for the Blogs. Do it for the web. Do it for the search engines. Do it for your own sites. Do it for yourself.

We can't kill SPAMMING BLOGGERS or SPAM BLOGS completely. We can keep them at bay if we all work at it together.
