Worldwide there are over 4 billion subscribers out of a total population of just under 7 billion. Market researchers, Gartner, state that there were 1.2 billion new cellphones sold in 2009. More people are buying and using cell phones than are buying and accessing networks with computers.
Cell phones are cheaper than computers and easier to carry around. While smartphones have been around for a while and PDAs for even longer, the release of the iPhone brought to the masses an acceptance for the concept of surfing the web on hand-held devices. Maybe it was Apple’s choice to give the thing such a large screen or maybe it was just the serendipitous combination of a hot gadget at a time when wireless networks were faster than ever. Regardless of the reason, the idea of watching a full-length movie or live events on something you can fit in your pocket is no longer the stuff of science fiction. While I’m happy to accept my prognosticating props for the prevalence of mobile content, I’m not blind to reality. Streaming video content over a cellphone network is fairly expensive. While I hope the day soon comes where people will be able to operate their handheld devices at prices similar to their computer-based broadband charges, I won’t hold my breath. My guess is that, when it comes to full-length programs, most users will continue to pre-load their phones from their PCs. For now, most on-the-go downloading is going to be relegated to clips, games, ringtones, web browsing and music.
