Internet smutmongering is easy. Too easy. Deceptively easy. It's so easy that once we've got a magic formula figured out, we think the process becomes automatic. We build sites and pages, submit them and forget them. Collectively, we've left behind hundred of thousands of galleries and free sites. This has been our modus operandi for practically a decade.
I remember other webmasters, looking at me quizzically when I first explained the awesomeness of blogging. Old-timers and young punks laughed at my naive geekiness. Some called it a fad. Others could not foresee the profit potential of blogs. There were those that questioned my claims about blogs and search engines. The reactions were natural. These cynics brought up a most important point:
Blogs take a lot of work.
|
"You work your ass off making all those little galleries and free sites. You'll work your ass off blogging. You're just going to work another part of your ass." |
Why do you want to build a blog? If you just want an online journal where you can vent, go for it. If you want to blog for the purposes of making money, you have to treat the operation the same as you would any other business. You have to make the effort. You have to invest the time and yes, the money. Blogs are not galleries or three-page free-sites. Blogs require regular, consistent attention. Blogging involves more than uploading a fresh batch of images or video clips. For the porn webmaster, blogging forces us to think in words as opposed to pictures. Blogging is not difficult, just different when compared to classic Internet porn marketing. You work your ass off making all those little galleries and free sites. You'll work your ass off blogging. You're just going to work another part of your ass.
First of all, get serious. No push-button free-hosted blogging. Save that for splogs and filler content. Get a real domain and real hosting. Then get some good blog software. We recommend WordPress. Create your database, upload the WordPress files and get to business, seriously.
Find the right sponsors for your blog. If you want to blog about tattoos, then sign up for a sponsor with a Goth niche paysite. If you want to blog the depraved ramblings of some horny douchebag, sell gonzo porn. Look into sponsors that offer alternative programs and services like games, music and clothing. Feature more than one sponsor but don't go overboard with too many. Paste banners and text ads in your sidebar(s). Try adding a sponsor link in your signature file. Remember to include sponsor ads in static/permalink pages. You don't have to tout your sponsors in every single blog entry. Let your layout do the work for you. With a blog, you're aiming for return visitors and long website shelf life. Find the sponsors that fit and get to blogging.
Blog regularly. Blog often.
This is the rule that rules all other blog rules. This rule is so simple yet so simple to ignore. Ignore at your peril. Blog fans looks for the blogs that post several times a day. On rare occasions, there are bloggers whose posts are so entertaining, they garner big audiences despite posting only once a day or week. As a beginning blogger, it is imperative that you post a new entry at least once a day. Regular blogging will improve your audience share as well as your standing with search engines and RSS feeds. The more you blog, the more your site will show up in searches, tags and blogrolls. The less you blog, the more your traffic slows down. You can't get any plainer than that. Just the same, bloggers bore quickly. Writing a bit of unique prose isn't as simple-minded as it seems. Many blogs have been left to die, neglected after a month or three. If you want to blog for money, blog regularly and often.
Join the blogosphere. When a busy blog links to an entry on your blog, your traffic increases. Compare the experience to a top-listing for your gallery on a bustling TGP. You will see a bump. How does that happen? How will some major blog find you and bless you with glorious hits? You have to become part of the wonderful world of bloggers. Add blogs you favor to your blogroll (translation: link list).
Comment on other blogger's blogs include your URL in your signature. Find good posts made by other bloggers and write entries about them, don't forget to add a link to the entry. Submit your blog to RSS feeds. Join reader/tag services like Technorati, Feedburner, Digg, etc. Apply for dopey best blog awards. Join blogging communities and vote on other blogger's blogs. You spent years nurturing relationships with other adult webmasters on message boards. With blogging, you'll do the same thing but with blogger's etiquette. Always link to a blog source. Always give a shout out if a busy blog sends you traffic. Always stay in the mix.
Before you blog, think. Think business. Think about the effort ahead of you. Blog software is super simple once you've got it set up but the rest is all on you. Are you ready to blog and blog often? Are you prepared to join the blogosphere? Do you have a concept and theme for your blog? Have you selected sponsors that compliment your content? Do you have the domain, the hosting and the blog software? Blogging is fun. The simplicity of blogging makes it easy to take for granted. Don't let procrastination get the better of you. Think business when you think about blogs.
