    Color Code Guide
    By C-Pimp | Pimp @ CozyFrog

In most cases, the various types of colors you come across when surfing the web are designated by 6-digit hexadecimal numbers. Also known as a "Hex Code" or "Hex Value" - these combinations of letters and numbers look like this: #CCFFCC, #00AACC, #FFCCPP, etc...

Back in the early days of the web, the majority of Internet users were running with 8-Bit - 256 color screens. The 216 browser-safe color palette was introduced by Netscape to ensure that colors online stayed consistent across the various platforms (Windows and Macintosh). The browser-safe palette contains 216 colors instead of 256 because the 40 other colors have slight variations between PCs and MACs.

Nowadays, the majority of computers can support millions of colors making the browser-safe palette somewhat obsolete. When you design your sites, you no longer have to limit yourself to the 216 color palette.

The latest versions of today's imaging software like Adobe Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro still offer the option of swithing to the browser-safe palette. They also give you the HEX and RGB value of any color you choose making it easier than ever to get the color codes you need for your HTML documents.

Here is a complete list of 216 browser-safe colors that work with all browsers and platforms without any dithering. We also included 40 extra colors to complete the entire 256 web safe color palette. Each color is accompanied by it's respective HEX (Hexadecimal) value for easy reference.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • You should always keep your audtience in mind when working with colors on the web. Take the time to determine who will be visiting your site.
  • If your website targets webmasters and/or computer savvy individuals, the web safe palette won't have much use since the principal audience will most likely have up-to-date computers that can support millions of colors.
  • If your audience is a larger market comprising of people from around the globe, you might choose to stay web safe in your color choices to ensure that those visiting your website on ancient machines have a pleasurable visit. Sometimes it's better to to be safe than sorry!
