People get downright apoplectic about pop-up windows. I mean, frothing-at-the-mouth mad. I didn't invent the things but being a part of the industry that did invent them, I always feel a twinge of guilt when I hear or read a non-webmaster bitch about their own, personal pop-up hell story.
Here's the Catch 22 about pops: There's no question that most everybody hates them. However, advertisers still use them because they still make money. Apparently, there are enough people who manage to buy products and services because of/in spite of annoying pop up consoles.

Naturally, popup usage has toned down dramatically in the last four or so years, at least among adult webmasters. Today, we take a subtler approach with exit pops, pop-unders and Flash overlays. Just the same, the Circle Jerk is alive and well and it's pretty hard to sell sponsors without shielding your surfers from popups.
If your sponsors use popups in their paysite tours and you are making money, keep up the good work. If you're a webmaster that wants to market a paysite or product to a surfer and you want to do it console-free, take heart.
