Attack of the Pod Porn! - Part #1
    By Titmowse | Writer @ CozyFrog | MAR.26.2007

When television first came onto the scene, skeptics called it a fad. Skeptics also said the same about motion pictures and photography. I would imagine that skeptics probably had similar opinions about the printing press and the written word. For all the advances in communication, from radio to cable to the Internet, there have been frowning skeptics giving each a down-turned thumb.

Five and a half years ago, I authored a series of articles entitled “Pockets of Porn”. In that series, I wrote about the emergence of portable communication devices and how adult webmasters should learn to deliver porn on them. At the time, American webmasters questioned my sanity. They posited that no one would want to view smut on a tiny screen.

"Today, practically every adult sponsor features at least one site that delivers content to a portable device, be it cellphone, PSP or the iPod."
Ironically, European webmasters informed me that I was behind the times. Today, practically every adult sponsor features at least one site that delivers content to a portable device, be it cellphone, PSP or the iPod.

Since 2004, Sony has sold more than 22 million PlayStation Portable devices. In 2005 alone, Apple sold 32 million Pods. In just the second quarter of 2005, users purchased 190 million cellphones. The PSP is capable of playing full-length movies via specially formatted disks, loaded directly into the player. The iPod can play videos downloaded off the Internet. Cellphones connect to wireless networks and users can perform a myriad of tasks on them, from IM chatting, to writing/sending email, to shooting and uploading video. If these portable communication appliances are fads, they certainly are long- running ones.

Skeptics that question why users would want to view adult content on their hand-held hardware simply don’t understand the appeal of tiny technology. That appeal can be summed up in three words:

    Portability, Intimacy and Convenience.

Sure, notebook computers are presently more powerful than the average, modern cellphone. However, one must note that multi-function SmartPhones contain processors as powerful as the laptops of yesterday.

A user can literally operate a SmartPhone in the same manner, as they would have their notebook PC a few, short years ago. Compared to a pocketsize cellphone, a laptop is a bulky burden. Privacy screens on notebooks are fine but the cellphone screen is eminently more private. PSPs and iPods boast the same preferable qualities.

These are communication devices that one can easily slip into a coat or pants pocket. When you’re on the road and feeling lonely, which sounds better: Looking for a hidden corner, hoping for a hotspot, praying that nobody catches a glimpse at your fifteen-inch screen full of porn? Or, turning on your iPod, scrolling the menu to fuckslut.mov and pressing play?

When I wrote “Pockets of Porn” in 2001, color screens on handheld devices were new to the American market. My PDA at the time had 2 Megs of memory, a 16 MHz processor and a black/white interface.

Back then, I was thrilled that the damned thing had back lighting. I also ignored folks who told me I couldn’t use it as a word processor. I bought a PDA keyboard and installed the software that came with it and wrote many articles for Cozy Frog on my little Palm OS Handspring. I uploaded those articles to my computer and sent them off to Cozy.

If I had invested a few extra dollars, I could have used the device as a cellphone or surfed the web with a WAP-enabled browser. The pics would have been crappy but I would have had no trouble reading news sites or other text-based pages.

Today, the Palm Treo 700p boasts 128 Megs of memory, a 312MHZ processor and a 65,536-color screen. The iPod can hold as much as 5 Gigs of data and it runs on two 9o MHz processors. The PSP has a screen resolution of 480×272/16 million colors, is wifi capable and offers a 333 MHz CPU. Five years ago, I was surfing the Internet on a desktop computer with a 2 Gig drive, 64 Megs of RAM and a 500 MHz CPU. That kind of puts things in perspective, doesn’t it?

Handheld communication devices might not get smaller but you can bank on the fact that they will become more powerful. In part two of this two-part article, I will further discuss the handheld, mobile revolution and give you information on how you can cash in. Skeptics beware!
