Trend analysts like to talk about the influence of the Internet on modern society but I propose that cellphones are impacting our culture as much, if not more, than the web. Portability is where it's at. People want to take their gadgets with them and nothing proves that more than the one billion new cellphones, purchased last year, worldwide. One Billion. That's a lot of cell phones. That's a lot of people. Estimates claim that cell phone market saturation is well over 95% and will be one hundred percent within ten years. Simultaneously, cellphone technology is evolving at a rapid pace. The bricks and car phones of the late eighties mutated into the hand-sized models that exploded in the nineties. By the time the century changed, there were PDA's, glorified pagers and an addicting little device called the BlackBerry. All the while, the cell phone got smaller and fancier to where now, cellphones are capable of surfing the web, playing movies and music, instant messaging and taking photos and video. Oh yeah, they also make telephone calls.

If you've been paying attention for the last few years, you've noticed ads for cellphone services, airing on late night television and printed in the back of magazines. Users send a text message to a particular number and they are charged for product purchased via their cellphone bill. Some companies sell text message chat, some sell ringtones and some sell wallpaper and screensavers. Some providers sell all these features plus many more. The cellphone has become quite the little personal entertainment device. In addition, there are a good number of people using their cellphones as tiny wallets. SMS billing enables the user to pay for items, both tangible and virtual, via their cells. This is important to note because millions and millions of adults in this world do not have credit cards and never will - not because they are poor but because credit cards are primarily a North American thing. These millions of adults want to enjoy sexual entertainment and would be more than happy to pay for the goods you offer, if only you offered SMS billing.
Our industry is always evolving. We are constantly adapting to new trends and advances in technology. As well, our business is extremely competitive because so many of us are pushing the same, basic product. Most of us sell memberships to porn paysites. Most of us are trying to sell to North Americans. Mobile phone features in Norway or Japan are more abundant than they are in the U.S. but that fact leads back to the need for webmasters to stretch their market reach, in order to stay ahead of competition. Marketing a few SMS/Cellphone-type services places the webmaster outside the confines of the pornsite/credit card/U.S. trap.
That horny dude in Denmark is never going to pay for access to your Gang Bang paysite because he's never going to own a credit card. That New Jersey mobile owner with the new smartphone can buy a membership anytime over the web, on a PC. That's old school. What the smartphone newbie really wants is some porn for his little hand gadget. He wants some nasty girl wallpaper, a sexy ringtone, maybe even some hot text chat. He wants to pay for it with the very device he is holding in his hand. All these services can be provided and paid for over a cellphone, using M-Commerce (Mobile Commerce).
The wicked awesome thing is, the field is ready for us. Today's smartphones download better quality content at faster speeds. Even slowpoke Americans have become accustomed to paid text-message services, where charges are applied to their accounts. They've all downloaded polyphonic ringtones and fancy themes. Now, they're downloading songs and banking and buying packaged cellphone services.
There are but a few adult vendors who offer a way for the lone webmaster to either sell or market SMS/Cellphone content. There are lots of sponsors that use SMS billing and plenty of SMS billing providers. Just the same there is enough interest and potential in this area to warrant a convention.
Early this year, the Mobile Adult Content Congress held their 3rd annual gathering in Miami, Florida. This two-day event covered topics ranging from Age Verification, to Mobile Payments, to Branding. There is probably no better venue for learning how you can get in on this growing sphere for porn profits. If you want to hit a show that is off the well-tread path, consider attending the MAC Congress. You can find out more by visiting the MACC website.
