What is a cartoon? To our ancient ancestors, those line depictions of beasts they scratched on cave walls were mystical incarnations of the real thing. Artistic realism came about much later on the timeline of human evolution. Some say what makes a toon a toon is the outline. Real life objects have no outline. But we now have 3D rendering which emulates realism by obfuscating the grid and filtering over the outline. Are 3D animations too real to be toons? What about Anime? A page can feature nothing but toons or it can simply carry a nice plugin strip for a member’s area.
The 3D artist overlays textures and bevels on a grid until they are so smooth and dimensional that the resulting image almost leaps from the webpage. In fact 3D rendering has gotten so sophisticated and cost effective that Hollywood has come to depend on it.
